Worlds in a Box: Creating Assemblage Boxes

The students will make individual assemblage boxes that reflect their uniqueness
and their personal interests. They also will learn about artist Joseph Cornell,
Lincoln artist and collector Charles Johnson and Surrealism. The students'
boxes will express their individuality and will give them an opportunity to explore
a wide array of materials and design issues. Students are encouraged to keep a
journal throughout the project as a means for documenting the development of
their project.

Painting with Shapes

Students learn to create a composition using basic shapes – square, rectangle, circle and

New Animations

This project introduces children to historical and contemporary methods of animation
development and processing. Merging history with the present, hand drawn imagery is
coupled with digital processing as students learn to investigate everyday objects,
drawing from real-life and imagined experience, breaking down the beginning and end
to explore the in-between. Using a matrix of small squares, an image is broken down
and drawn in various stages and then processed into digital format. Similar to the flip
book lesson plan, this project introduces the illusion of movement and how it is
explored and developed in digital form.

something on every page.

Making Flip Books

This project invites children to explore the illustration process through the investigation
and manipulation of the hand drawn image. As the process of motion is broken down page by
page, in the flip book format, children begin to see and understand that illusion of movement
occurs as the drawn image changes page by page.

Finding Your Own View

This project exposes students to a variety of artists and media within a gallery or museum
setting as well as encourages a dialogue about the differences between abstract and
representational art. Any exhibition or collection could be used that has a variety of subject
matter, media and levels of abstraction. The students use viewfinders to zero in on a specific
area of the original work of art. Then they draw it on a 4x6” paper using oil pastels to make
the view their own. Finally, the new artwork is framed with the viewfinder.

Faces in Fiber

Through this project students learn how to create portraits in fabric. Students are given small

project is on learning to use fabric in different ways, to create texture, shadow, and emotion.

Dia delos muertos/making masks

This lesson introduces students to the history and cultural traditions of Dia de los Muertos
while creating clay masks. Dia de los Muertos is a centuries-old spiritual tradition expressing
the continuity of life by honoring the dead on their return to Earth for one day each year.
There are many projects that could be developed around this celebration
but in this lesson, we focus on creating masks.
